Half an hour later!

Experiences with Maha Periyava: Half an hour later!

One day Sri Maha Periyava’s feet were swollen as if he suffered from elephantiasis. An elderly sumangali performed arati to Periyava. She was very upset when she saw Periyava’s swollen feet. She asked, “Is there no one to attend to Periyava who cures the devotees who throng to him?” She submitted her prayer to Periyava in a tearful voice. “It would be good if Periyava paid some attention to his health” …Please take medicines prescribed by a good doctor.”

Periyava had to only laugh… He knew that the lady was referring to his feet. “Come and have a look half an hour later.” He said to the lady.

After the lady left, Periyava sat in the padmasana for fifteen minutes and did his japa. The elderly lady returned a short while later. Periyava’s feet had returned to normalcy and the swelling had vanished. The lady was not able to understand how the swelling had gone down without taking any medication.

It was always a leela (divine play) for Periyava to incur a disease on himself and then cure himself of it. He would take on a devotee’s disease and suffer it himself to exhaust the devotee’s karma without contradicting the Shastras.

In any case, there is no place for any logic when it comes to the divine play of grace.

  4. Again I feel such posts could be belittling the Avatara Purusha’s real mahimai.

It is common knowledge that elderly persons will have big swelling in the legs and may even look scary if they have been sitting with their legs hanging down.
This is because of the flow of body fluids to the lower half of the body while sitting for considerable time.
Once you lift the legs or sit on even ground for sometime the fluids flow back and the legs appear normal.

This is very normal and I have seen this in many elders including my father. The swelling returns as sitting resumes etc….

Please do not reduce the greatness of Sri Mahaperiyava with such narratives.

I do not mean any offence since I know all sishyas are devoted as much as anyone else
