Experiences with Maha Periyava – Rudraksha

Once Kripananda Variyar, a great exponent of Upanyasam (discourse) went to Kancheepuram to have darshan of Maha Periyava. When his turn came to prostrate, Periyaval stopped him saying that he was wearing a Shiva Lingam around his neck, & if he prostrates it would touch the ground, which is wrong.

Later Periyaval was getting ready to perform the Chandramoulishwara pooja. As the pooja would take almost 4hrs, Kripananda Variyar told the assistant that he will visit the temples in Kancheepuram & come back for His darshan again.

During his visit to the temples, outside a temple, he met Anantharama Deekshithar, another exponent of Upanyasam. They spent some time talking to each other. While they were talking, an old lady (above 80-85 yrs) came to Anantharama Deekshithar & told him to get Rudraksham for her from Periyaval. Anantharama Deekshithar was surprised & shocked because the lady was totally a stranger to him!! And why should he get it for her from Periyaval!!! But she command & said that she would be waiting at the temple for the Rudraksham.

Both the exponents went to the Srimatam with confused minds on how to ask. Periyaval was giving darshan, & told one of the assistants to take the 2 exponents to his room.

As the assistant was making room for them to be seated, he found a shawl & a Rudraksha mala which he kept aside.

After blessing the crowd, Periyaval entered the room where the 2 exponents were seated. Before any conversation began, Periyaval called the assistant & told him to give the shawl & Rudraksha mala to Anantharama Deekshithar. Then He told Anantharama Deekshithar to give the shawl & mala to Mahalakshmi, the old lady who would be waiting in the temple. Then Periyaval also informed them, “she ( old lady) was one of the reasons for my birth into the universe”.

The old lady, Mahalakshmi was the Mid-wife during Periyaval’s birth.
