  1. Though all the Thevarams and other Thirumurais sing about 3,000 Chidambaram Dheekshitars, there were only 2,999 Dheekshitars in human form in old days. Lord Nataraja Himself revealed to Sri Patanjali Maharishi that the great Lord Chitsabesha Himself is the 3,000th Dheekshitar! There are both Sanskrit and Tamil works as pramanams for this historical event.

When Sri Thirunganan Sambandhar visited Chidambaram, He showed to other Shiva Bhaktas around him, including Sri Thiruneelakanta Yaazhpaanar, how Chidambaram Dheekshitars are actually saakshaath Shiva Ghanams from Kailasam.

That is why Sri Thiruvarur Thyagaraja Himself prompted Sri Sundara Murthy Swamigal (who is actually the avatar of the Chaaya Roopam of Sri Parameswaran Himself) with the famous first line “Thillai Vaazh Anthanartham Adiyaarkum Adiyen!” to help the later sing the famous song that eventually became the basis for Sekkizhar’s Periya Puranam. Even today, Chidambaram Dheekshitars prove why Sri Thiruvarur Thyagaraja prompted that famous first line. Such is the greatness of Chidambaram Dheekshitars!

  2. Hoisting of our national flag has been the practice in Chidambaram right from the time Bharat got independence. For Chidambaram Dheekshitars, patriotism is in their blood. Chidambaram Dheekshitars have fought for our nation and Bharatiya heritage thoughout the history against all kinds of invaders.

Further, Chidambaram is the only Kshetram where all the Thirumurais in Tamil are worshipped and offered as regular part of worship six times a day, in addition to on special days and occasions related to each Nayanmar, the two Mahotsavams, etc. Even the revival of Thirupugazh was made possible only because of Chidambaram Dheekshitars – with over six separate sannathis for Lord Muruga in the Temple, with several of them being sung by Sri Arunagirinathar.

Most importantly, Chidambaram is the only Kshetram in the world (that includes Kashi and Kanchi) where Vaidheeka sampradhayam has been in continuous practice through ages. So, several Dheekshitars continue to excel as scholars in both Tamil and Sanskrit.

    • IT IS POSSIBLE I AM WRONG. IF SO, KINDLY CORRECT ME : I remember to have read somewhere that the Deekshitars of Chidambaram were one thousand in number and were known as “Thillai Ore Ayiram”. It is also believed they are all manifestations of Sri Mahadeva — at par with Sri Sundaramoorthy Nayanar — and that they descended to Bhu lokam along with Sri Mahadeva from Kailash.

  3. A very big salute to the patriotic Dheekshidhars.

  4. My native is Chidambaram, but I don’t know about this.
Thanks for sending this valuable information
    .

  5. Excellent practice

  6. W o W.. feeling ecstatic, goosebumps seeing a Deekshitar carrying the national flag and hoisting it.. How long they have been doing this? Any reason behind doing this, any story connected with it? Since it is the only temple in India(known to us) does this.. Thanks.

  7. Wonderful. Never knew this before. Thanks to Srimaan Mahesh for the post and Srimaan Aiyerr for the crisp translation

  8. I am attempting a translation for the first time from English to Tamil. Kindly pardon me for mistakes if any.

“Every year on 15 August there is a special celebration in Sri Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu. Early in the morning they keep our National Flag on a Silver Platter and offer pooja to it before Sri Nataraja. Then they take that flag in a procession accompanied by beating of drums & blowing of trumpets they hoist it atop the Temple’s Eastern Tower [Gopuram]”.

To my knowledge in no other religious place – secular or communal – this is done.
