    Nama: Parvathi Pathayae ! Hara Hara Mahadeva !
    Govindha Nama Sankeerthanam ! Govindha Govindha !

    Krishnashtami, Navarathri are (festival) days when Bagavan appears in order to bless this world. During these days, if we perform Puja, observe fasting, do Bajan, chant Bagavan Nama, or sing His praise, those are very sacred moments. Today, we have Vasantha Navarathri Puja here. The other Navarathri is ‘Saran’ Navarathri. There are seasons(rutu) such as Sarath rutu, Vasantha rutu etc. The season covering Tamil months ‘Aippasi’ and ‘Karthikai’ is known as ‘Sarath’ rutu; hence ‘Saran’ Navarathri. Because it is Navarathri during ‘Sarath’ rutu, it is called ‘Saradha Navarathri’. In the North it is called ‘Durga Pooja’. This Navarathri is primarily for Devi Durga. She is ‘sakshat’ (truly) Parameswari, the gentle manifestation of Ambal.

    The Puja is for Ambal who destroys the evil and wipes out (our) difficulties; it is called ‘Ayutha Puja’ in the last day.

    This (Navarathri) is called ‘Devi Navarathri’. That is ‘Durga Prasanam’ (presence of Durga) and this is ‘Devi Prasanam’, Mother’s gentle appearance. The other one is the appearance of Durga, in war—related activities in order to wipe out evil and remove our difficulties. The present (Devi Navarathri) one is the time, when Devi showers Her gentle blessings. In Chennai (Periava calls it ‘Patnam’) and Telugu region, this is called ‘Rama NavarAthram’. Because, Rama Navami also has nine days, this is called Rama navarAthram’. During this Vasantha rutu, both Devi Navarathri and Rama Navarathri occur simultaneously, both the beginning and the end. Raman’s ‘Roopam’ is of the green colour of the ‘Arukampul’ (cynodon dactylon ) “Ramam Dhoorvathala shyamam”. He is called ‘Green coloured’ (பச்சை வர்ணன்). Ambal is also of the same colour.
    Ambal’s appearance is of absolute green colour. The appearances of both of them are one and the same.
    Vedhantam is the best among Vedas—–Upanishad. It talks about wisdom. There are ten Upanishads, which are the principal ones. The first one is called ‘Easopanishad’. The second one is called ‘Kenopanishad’. There is a story in ‘Kenopanishad’. Once Devas achieved a big victory. So, They started celebrating it. The celebration was nothing but praising one another, praising themselves; they got highly egoistic. Bagavan wanted to use this occasion in order to make people understand that they should not get egoistic at such times but should realize that it was due to Bagavan’s Anugraham, and that Bagavan uses us only as instruments in any activity and so we should not get the feeling that “I did this”. So, what did ‘Swami’ do ? He created a big figure in the place where the Devas were celebrating; neither the head nor the foot of the figure could be seen. The figure was extremely bright. The Devas were crowding nearby and discussing to figure out the huge figure that appeared there. They sent ‘Agni devatha’ (God of Fire) first to go and find out what it was. The figure asked Agni devatha, “Who are you?” Agni devatha replied proudly, “I am Agni (Fire), I am also called ‘Jathavedas’”.

    “What is your power then?”—asked the figure.

    Agni replied that he can burn everything in this world.

    Bagavan threw a small speck and asked him to burn it. In spite of using all in his power, Agni could not burn it. He returned, ashamed of even asking the figure who he was.

    The Devas then sent ‘Vayu’ (wind) there asking him to find out. The figure asked him what his power was. Vayu replied that he could throw away everything in the world. Bagavan threw a small speck and asked him to move it a little. He could not do it and returned without asking anything.

    Indira, who is the boss for all the Devathas, said that he would go himself and find out. When he reached there, the huge figure disappeared from there, and in that place, Ambal Umadevi, shining brightly like gold, appeared there. She spoke to Indira, “What you saw up till now was ‘Paramathman’ Himself, Brahma Swaroopam. Because all of you forgot about Him (during your victory celebrations), He appeared before you and enacted this drama, in order to remind you and bless you.” This incident is found in Devi Bagavatham.

    Devi Bagavatham says that Ambal appeared on the ninth day(Navami ) after Newmoon day of the Tamil month Panguni.

    I went to Kalahasthi Kshetram one day. In the ‘Ksehtra Puranam’ (history of the temple) there, mention is made of a mountain called ‘Sahasram’, where Kannappan (Nayanar) lived. Under the two hills, there is a place with a lot of mango trees, and waterfalls. If you climb up the hill a little, after two miles, there is a ‘Linga’ called the ‘Sahasrakshi Linga’ also called ‘Indira Linga’. And on the top of the hill is the place where Ambal appeared to Indira. Ambal is ‘Gnana Swaroopini’. That is why Ambal in Kalahasthi is called ‘Gnanambikai’. Because She did Gnanopadesam, She is called ‘Gnanambikai’.

    This story is in Devi Bagavatham; it is there in Kalahasthi Kshetra Puranam; it is found in Kenopanishad; time is mentioned in one, and place is mentioned in another. Kshetra Puranam says that Ambal appeared as Gnanambikai on the hill. That is why, Rama Navarathri and Devi Navarathri occur at the same time, in Vasantha Navarathri. That is why, we who came to have Darsan of Raman, had Darsan of Devi also. Vasantha Navarathri concluded here with both Rama and Devi together.

    With Ambal’s Anugraham may this place be hale and healthy. Sri Raman will bless everyone.

    आपदाम् अपहर्तारम् दातारम् सर्व सम्पदाम्

    लोकाभिरामं श्रीरामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहम्

    नम: कोदण्ड हस्ताय संधीकृत शचराय च

    खण्डीताखिल दैैत्याय रामायापन् निवारिणे

    Namaha kOthanda hasthAya samdIkrtha sacharAya cha

    kandIthAkila dhaithyAya RAmAyApan nivArinE.

    अग्रत: पृष्ठतश्चैव पार्श्वतश्च महाबलौ

    आकर्ण पूर्ण धन्वानौ रक्षेतां राम लक्ष्मणौ

    Agratha: prshtathaschaiva pArsvathascha mahAbalou

    Akarna pUrnam DhanvAnou rakshEthAm RAmaLakshmanou.

    सन्नद्ध: कवची खड्गी चापशारङ्गधरो युवा
    गच्छन् ममाग्रतो नित्यम् राम: पातु स लक्ष्मण:

    Sannadhdha kavarchI khadgI chApadhArangadharO yuvA

    Gachchan mamAgrathO nithyam RAma: pAthu sa Laksmanou:

    If we offer everything, welfare of our family, of our country, of the entire world at the lotus feet of Sri Raman and remember Him always, we will get all good things. He will bless us all. Raman is Ambikai and Ambikai is Raman. There is no difference in that. He appears in ‘Purusha Roopa’ here; there He appears in Sakthi Roopa.

    In North Thulasidhasar wrote Thulasi Ramayana; here in Thiruvaiyaru, Thyagaraja Swamikal (sang His Praise); then, Arunachala Kavirayar wrote Ramayanam. There is one Kshetram called Thillaiyadi. A devotee there was always chanting Rama Nama. He was asked by all Mahans, why he was chanting Rama Nama always. Can one answer when asked why we are always adding sugar to payasam?

    If our mind should be always sweet then there is only one item for that. We have to keep on chanting Rama Rama Rama. Ambikai is sAkshAt Rama Swaroopam. He is on the left side of Eswara as Sakthi Swaroopam. Here He is blessing us all in Purusha Roopa with Seetha. Both these festivals start on the same day. They are happening on the same day, same time. It is said in DeviBagavatham also.

    (Periava looks at a devotee and asks him..)

    “Have you seen (studied) Devi Bagavatham? Have you studied this particular place?”

    Devotee: Yes, I have seen..

    Periava: “Do you remember this ? you have not noticed ? It is mentioned there that Devi appeared as Uma on the Navami day of Vaikasi month.

    Ambal is blessing us all as Gnanambikai. Raman is blessing us all saving us from all dangers.
