The Hindu pays tribute to Shri Ra Gaapthy

 

 

Voice of Paramacharya

 

 

By compiling the speeches of the sage of Kanchi, Ra. Ganapathi has provided

 

an immortal link.

 

 

In his last letter to G. Vaidyanathan, Secretary, Sankara Bhakta Jana

 

Sabha, Ra. Ganapathi, prolific writer and compiler of “Deivathin Kural,”

 

has narrated how difficult it was for him to gather the speeches of

 

Paramacharya, add references to them and give them continuity. (*‘Naan

 

patta kashtam solli mudiyathu!’* he wrote.)

 

 

“Yes, but for Ra. Ganapathi, Kanchi Mahaswami’s speeches would not have

 

reached the masses,” says Vaidyanathan. “He noted down Periyava’s talks and

 

made cross-references, spoke to the people who knew the subject and got the

 

required clarifications. Periyava would speak about one subject in one

 

place and would leave it at that. Then again he would pick up the thread

 

and speak in detail about it in some other venue. The challenge was to

 

maintain the link. Ganapathi had a sharp memory and was alert in his

 

observation. He would give final shape to the article and there would be no

 

ambiguity in it!” he recalls.

 

 

“He used the same language that Periyava used so that the reader would feel

 

as if he was listening to Periyava!” adds Vaidyanathan.

 

 

Maniyam Selvan recalls an incident when his father Maniyam painted a black

 

and white painting of Siva Thandavam for *Kalki* Deepavali Malar in 1961.

 

Periyava holding a small veena was in the forefront of this painting. Lotus

 

petals, along with nagalinga flower were drawn in the place where the box

 

of sacred ash was normally kept near his feet. The huge piece of moon on

 

the head, the loose locks of hair, raised foot, abhaya hasta, agni and the

 

vilva leaves were visible, but not Muyalakan or the right foot of the Lord.

 

“Ra. Ganapathi Sir took this Deepavali Malar to Periyava, when the sage

 

asked him to fetch my father during his next visit to the mutt. When

 

Ganapathi Sir took my father to the Mutt, Periyava said, “You have opened

 

my eyes!”

 

 

“In the original photograph of Periyava, his eyes were looking down at the

 

veena he was holding. In the painting of Maniyam, however, Periyava’s eyes

 

were looking straight. Father, though a bit embarrassed, said: ‘No

 

Periyava. I thought it would be nice if your ‘paarvai’ (vision) fell on the

 

devotees!’ Periyava replied: ‘Maniyam, what I saw in my inward vision, you

 

had painted in the background showing the Siva Thandavam!

 

 

Maniyam drew the illustrations for the serial, ‘Jaya Jaya Sankara’ that

 

Ganapati wrote in *Kalki.* “In 1970, when the Shankara Shanmatha Conference

 

was held in Mylapore, I drew those 25 pictures all over again. My mother

 

took them along when we (mother, myself and uncle) visited Periyava in

 

Thenambakkam and showed them. He was immensely pleased and those blessings

 

were precious! But for Ra. Ganapathi Sir, this would not have happened!”

 

Incidentally, the cover paintings for two volumes of ‘Deivathin Kural’ were

 

done by Ma.Se.

 

 

Even the rationalist Anna had praised Ra. Ganapathi’s way of writing. In

 

‘Than Varalaru,’ published by Bharati Pathippakam, in one of the chapters,

 

where he writes about the loss of his beloved mother, Anna refers to the

 

serial Ra. Ganapathi was writing in *Kalki*. In that particular week’s

 

issue, Ganapathi had written about the demise of Sankara’s mother Aryambal

 

and Sankara’s sorrow. Anna writes that he was moved by the writing,

 

especially when he had lost his own mother at that point of time.

 

 

‘Deivathin Kural’ has been translated into English (‘Voice of God’) and

 

also in many other languages. Educationist and philanthropist V. Shankar of

 

Mumbai arranged to get them translated in Hindi and three volumes have

 

already been released.

 

 

Sri Ganesa Sarma has been giving monthly lectures on the basis of

 

“Deivathin Kural” in many different venues and the audience relish the

 

simple way in which he interprets it.

 

 

Ra. Ganapathi suffered physically and mentally in the evening of his life

 

but he was a true Karma Yogi.

 

 

*Life with a purpose*

 

 

Bharatanatyam exponent, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam, sends this message:

 

 

“‘Kaarana Janmam’ – it would be an apt description of Ra. Ganapathy’s

 

presence on earth – a life endowed by the Almighty for a purpose. The

 

“Deivathin Kural” volumes stand as an eternal beacon of light to showcase

 

the spiritual thoughts that emanated from the centenarian sage of Kanchi.

 

 

Ganapathy, who remained a bachelor, was himself a sage, who shunned

 

publicity. The former President R. Venkataraman rightly described

 

‘Deivathin Kural’ as ‘Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Upanishad.’

 

 

“When I went to pay my last respects to Sri. Ra. Ganapathy, I felt doubly

 

blessed to know that my humble little book, ‘Kanchi Mahaswami’s Vision of

 

Asian Culture,’ was the only work for which he had graciously given a

 

Foreword. On the holy day of Mahasivaratri, he has joined the Lotus Feet of

 

Kanchi Mahaswami, who was looked upon as Parameswara in human form.”

Nearing the end of my trip….

Just another few days to go before I come back…visited lots of places, met lots of people/friends, had good time. At the end, my mother had to be admitted for a surgery – nothing life-threatening, but a procedure that has to be done. Surgery is over and she is on the recovery path..should be home in the next few days..

I planned this trip in a way that I would be in Kanchipuram for Maha Shivarathiri. It looks like I was not blessed, I ended up in the hospital room with my mother, helping her. I tried hard to stay up all night – but couldn’t do it beyond 2 PM. It was hard to be on a hospital room, lights turned off, nobody to talk to and stay up all night….I am glad I was able to help my mother – wish I were able to attend at least one abishekam in the temple Looks like my prayers aren’t enough….

Regarding devotees’ experiences, I am coming back home with lots of files…will start to publish once i am back to US. Life here during such short stays are very busy and unable control/manage the time – it manages me!

On the veda rakshana drive, all the cheques collected in India/US have been handed over to Shri Chandramouli – some more are still left. I will update you all in the next week with more details…

Shri Ra Ganapathi attains Lotus feet of Mahaperiyava

This is to inform our friends that Shri. Ra. Ganapathi has departed our world. The moment of his passing came around 7:30 PM on this auspicious Maha ShivaRatri evening. The family has stated that he was very conscious and aware at the moment of his passing. He started a japam as he started on his way.

He had been well aware of the forthcoming end for the last few days and has shared it with a few people close to him.  As many of us are aware, he has written a number of books (over 35) and articles on Satvik matters. His career as we knew it, started with Jaya Jaya Shankara in 1962, which was published as a serial in the weekly, Kalki and was then published as a book. Over 10 in years in Kalki, and over another 25 years as a freelancer, he has written a number of books and articles touching on the life and words of Shri Kanchi Maha Periyava, as also Shri Satya Sai Baba, Shri ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Swami Vivekanada, Sharadamani and Bhakta Meerabai.

He was gifted in the area of music as well and some of his kritis and bhajans have been rendered by reknowned karnatak musicians. Shri Ganapathi never coveted any fame nor material possessions. A number of us have known him to never touch money and have watched his needs and legal obligations being miraculously met over and over for a number of years, long before he had acquired any name recognition.

Hinduism – a kitchen religion – a must-read

It seems that Nehru once joked that Hinduism is a kitchen religion. Although he is an idiot, who said this without any meaning, our Periyava explains how our whole philosophy starts from the kitchen. .. This is from “Deivathin Kural” – I guess Vol 1.

In today’s world, we’ve completely forgotten the foundation – temptations, our lifestyle etc has pushed us to eating outside a mandatory thing….By reading this, one can realize why “aathu saapadu” is critically important for spiritual progress.

 

ராஜா ஒர்த்தன் இருந்தான். அவனுக்கு ஒரு குரு. அவர் பெரிய மஹான். அடிக்கடி அரண்மனைக்குப் போயி அவனுக்கு நல்ல உபதேசங்களைப் பண்ணிட்டு வருவார். அந்தமாதிரி ஒருநாள், காலம்பற போனவர், ரொம்ப நேரமா அநேக விஷயங்களைப் பேசிண்டே இருந்தாரா!…….மத்யான்னம் வந்துடுத்து. ராஜா சொன்னான் ” இங்கியே பிக்ஷை பண்ணிட்டு போகணும். ஆசார நியமத்தோட, ஒங்களுக்குன்னு தனியா சமைச்சுப் போட ஏற்பாடு பண்றேன்..”ன்னு ரொம்ப கெஞ்சினான். மறுக்க முடியாம ஒத்துண்டார். நன்னா ஸம்ருத்தியா போஜனம் ஆச்சு! பஞ்சபக்ஷ்ய போஜனம் பண்ணினதால அரண்மணைலேயே கொஞ்சம் ஸ்ரமப் பரிஹாரம் பண்ணிண்டார். எங்க? ராஜாவோட ‘ரூம்’ லேயே படுத்துண்டார். படுத்துண்டு இருக்கறச்சே, அங்க ஒரு சுவர்ல தொங்கிண்டு இருந்த ஒரு முத்து ஹாரம் அவர் கண்ணுல பட்டுது. அது ரொம்ப ஒஸ்தியான முத்து! சாக்ஷாத் ராஜாவோடது!

நல்ல வைராகியான குருவுக்கு அன்னிக்கு என்னவோ அந்த முக்தாஹாரத்தை பாத்ததும், அதை எடுத்துக்கணும்…ன்னு ஒரு எண்ணம் ரொம்ப ‘ஸ்ட்ராங்’ ஆ உண்டாச்சு! பக்கத்ல யாருமே இல்லாததால, சட்னு அதை எடுத்து வஸ்த்ரத்துக்குள்ள ஒளிச்சு வெச்சுண்டுட்டார். சாதாரண மனுஷா பண்ணினாலே, திருட்டு..ங்கறது மஹாபாவம், தப்பு! இவரோ, பெரிய மஹானா, ராஜகுருவா இருக்கப்பட்டவர், கொஞ்சங்கூட மனஸை உறுத்தாம, இப்பிடி பண்ணிப்டு, தாம்பாட்டுக்கு ஆஸ்ரமத்துக்கு போய்ட்டார்! சித்தே நாழி ஆனப்புறம், ஹாரம் திருட்டுப் போன சமாச்சாரம் அரண்மனைல தெரிஞ்சுது. ஒர்த்தரையும் விடலை. எல்லாரையும் ‘செக்’ பண்ணியாச்சு. ஆனா, வாஸ்த்தவத்ல அதுக்கு காரணமான குருவை மட்டும் யாருமே கொஞ்சங்கூட சந்தேஹப்படலை. ஏன்னா………..அவர் அன்னிவரைக்கும் அவ்வளவு ஸுத்தரா இருந்தவர்!

“பழி ஓரிடம், பண்டம் ஓரிடம்”…ன்னு யார் யாரையோ பிடிச்சு, மரியாதைப்பட்டவாளை வாயால கேட்டு, ஆள் படைகளை அடிச்சு, ஒதைச்சு “enquiry “, “investigation ” அது இதுன்னு நடத்தினா! தடயம் ஒண்ணும் கெடைக்கலை. இப்டியே ஒரு நாள் முழுக்கப் போச்சு! அன்னிக்கு ராத்ரி, “குத்தமுள்ள நெஞ்சு குறுகுறுத்ததால” இல்லே; மத்யான்னம் பண்ணினது போறாதுன்னு, ராத்ரியும் ஏதோ கன்னா பின்னா…ன்னு எண்ணம்! அது வேணும் இது வேணும்…ங்கற ஆசைனால தூக்கமே வரலை அந்த குருவுக்கு. ஸம்ருத்தியா சாப்டுட்டு ராப்பூரா தூங்காததால, ஒரே அஜீர்ணம்! மறுநாள், முழிச்சுக்கறச்சேயே வயத்ல ‘கடமுடா’ பண்ண ஆரம்பிச்சுது. பேதி பிடிச்சுண்டது.

அஞ்சாறு தடவை போய் போய் ரொம்ப பலஹீனமா ஆய்ட்டார்! ஒடம்பு இப்பிடி ஆயாஸப்பட்டாக்கூட பேதியானதுலேர்ந்து அவர் மனஸ்ல ஒரு தெளிர்ச்சி உண்டாச்சு. இதுக்கு மேல ‘போறதுக்கு’ ஒண்ணும் இல்லேங்கற மாதிரி ஒடம்பு கிழிஞ்ச நாரா ஓஞ்சு போன ஸ்திதில………..அவரோட வழக்கமான ஒசந்த மனஸ் அவருக்கு வந்துடுத்து! அந்த பட்டபடைக்கற வெய்யில்ல, ஒடம்பு அசதியக்கூட பாக்காம, ஓடினார் முத்து மாலையைத் தூக்கிண்டு ராஜாகிட்ட! அவன்கிட்ட சொன்னார்……

“என்ன காரணமோ தெரியலை…….நேத்தி மத்யானத்துலேர்ந்து என் புத்தி கெட்டுப் போயி, அந்த கெட்ட ஆவேசத்ல, நான்தான் அந்த மஹா பாபத்தை பண்ணிட்டேன்! நிர்தோஷமான மிச்ச எல்லாரையும் சிக்ஷை பண்ணின பாபத்துக்கு நான் காரணமாயிட்டேன். எல்லாத்தையும் சேத்து வெச்சு, நேக்கு தண்டனை குடு!” ன்னு ரொம்ப பொலம்பினார். ராஜாவோ நம்ப மாட்டேங்கறான்! “நீங்க சொன்னது ஒரு நாளும் நடந்திருக்காது. நெஜத்திருடன் பயந்து போய் காப்பாத்தச் சொல்லி ஒங்க கால்ல விழுந்திருப்பான்…..ஒங்களோட பரம தயாள குணத்தால, நீங்களே குத்தத்தைப் பண்ணின மாதிரி சொல்றேள்…”ன்னு சொல்லிட்டான். ஆனா, குரு ரொம்ப கெஞ்சி கெஞ்சி தன்னை நம்பும்படி சொன்னார். அவனோ பாதி மனசோட, “நீங்க சொல்றது நெஜந்தான்…ன்னு ஒத்துண்டாலும், நிச்சயமா இதுக்கு ஏதோ அடிப்படைல காரணம் இருக்கணும். “circumstance ,motive பாத்துதானே sentence பண்ணனும்னு law வே இருக்கோல்லியோ?” ன்னு விஜாரிச்சான்.

கடைசில குரு சொன்னார்… “வழக்கத்துக்கு மாறா நேத்திக்கு நான் அரண்மனைல சாப்டதால, அன்ன தோஷம் உண்டாகி, அது த்வாரா……….குண தோஷம் உண்டாகியிருக்கு. ராத்ரிகூட மனஸ் கெட்டே இருந்தது. வயறு கெட்டு “அதிஸாரம்” உண்டானதால, புத்தில தெளிவு உண்டாச்சு………அதுனால, நேத்து பக்வம் பண்ணின அன்னம் எங்கேர்ந்து வந்துதுன்னு விஜாரி” ன்னு ராஜாகிட்ட சொன்னார்.

அன்னத்துல கார்போஹைட்ரேட், வைட்டமின் மட்டும் இல்லே! அதை சமைச்சவர், காய்கறிகளை தானமாவோ, வெலைக்கோ குடுத்தவர், அதை பயிர் பண்ணினவர்…ன்னு ஒரு மொழநீள லிஸ்ட்டுக்கு, சம்பந்தபட்டவா எல்லாரோட குணதோஷங்களும் அந்த அன்னத்ல ‘டெபாசிட்’ ஆகி சாப்டறவா உள்ளே போறது.

ராஜா ஒடனே உக்ராண மணியக்காரன்கிட்ட முந்தின நாள் குருவுக்கு சமைச்ச அன்னம் எங்கேர்ந்து வந்துது?ன்னு விஜாரிச்சான். அவனும் விசாரணை பண்ணிட்டு சொன்னான்…….”கொஞ்சநாளைக்கு முன்னால, கடைத்தெருவுல இருக்கற மளிகைக் கடைல ரொம்ப ஒசந்ததான ஸன்ன சம்பா அரிசி மூட்டைகளை ஒரு திருடன் திருடி முதுகுல தூக்கிண்டு போறச்சே, ராஜசேவகாள்கிட்ட பிடிபட்டான். அவங்கிட்ட இருந்த மூட்டையை அரண்மனைல வெச்சிருந்தா. மளிகைக் கடைக்காரா யாருமே அரிசி மூட்டையை ‘டிமாண்ட்’ பண்ணிண்டு வராததால, அது அரசாங்கத்துக்கு சொந்தம். நேத்திக்குத்தான் குருவுக்காக, அந்த ஒசந்த அரிசியை சமைச்சோம்”. குருவுக்கு எல்லாம் புரிஞ்சு போச்சு.

“பாத்தியா? அதுனாலதான் ராஜாவோட அன்னம் கூடாது…ன்னு சாஸ்திரம் சொல்றது. கொஞ்சநேரம் திருடனோட முதுகுல ஒக்காந்திருந்த அரிசி மூட்டை எனக்குள்ள போய் என்னை திருட வெச்சுடுத்தே! எப்படி ஒர்த்தன் ஒடம்புல இருக்கற வ்யாதி அணுக்கள் இன்னோர்த்தன் ஒடம்புக்குள் தொத்திகறதோ……..அதே மாதிரி, கெட்ட எண்ணங்களோட பண்ற கார்யங்கள்ள, அதை பண்ணினவனோட மானஸீக அணுக்கள் ஒட்டிண்டு இருக்கும். அந்த திருடனோட திருட்டு குண பரமாணுக்கள் எனக்குள்ள போனதோட ‘ரிசல்ட்’டை பாத்தியா?” ன்னு கேட்டார்.

அதுனாலதான் கண்ட எடத்ல கண்டவா கையால சமைச்சு சாப்டரதால நம்ம மனஸ் கெட்டுப் போக ரொம்ப ஹேதுவாயிருக்கு. ஆத்துலேயே சமைச்சாலும், அன்னதோஷம் போறதுக்குத்தான், என்ன சமைக்கறோமோ அதை பகவானுக்கு நைவேத்யம் பண்ணிட்டா, அதுல இருக்கற கொஞ்சநஞ்ச தோஷமும் போய்டும். மனஸும் கெடாது. சரீரமும் கெடாது”.

Update on Veda Rakshana Drive

All,

I finally collected all cheques from Smt Baghirathi in Chennai and they will be handed over to Sri Chandramouli on 19th and subsequently debited as he is not in town. Cheques from India are roughly at 60K and cheques from US are roughly at 1 Lakhs. I might get some more cheques in these two locations in the future also, which will be deposited as Phase II.

Once I meet Sri Chandramouli here, I will post more on the patasala that are in our list for support etc.

Trip updates…..

Hope you haven’t forgotten me, yet!

Just got back from south temple run….pretty tiring but extraordinarily a divine trip…..want to write a lot, but wtill do it in pieces….

During this trip, visited 4 patasalas and each one is so unique in their own ways- here are the background::

1.       The one in Sirugumani  has photos of the last day of Soma Yagam – this vaathiyar  does not even go for vaidheekam – just like the good very old days. I was blessed to attend the concluding day of “soma yagam”, a very rare event…in today’s world, there are hardly anyone who is qualified to do such events….I also did Cauvery snanam with great pundits

2.       The one in Togur – Sri Vaishnava Vathiyar – story is most amazing – they are one of the last Jaimini Sama Saakai patasalai. He also does not even go for vaidheekam.  The story about the origins /resurrection of this patasalai reflects another divine  manifestation of Veda Samrakshanam by — who else — Sri Maha Periyava.  There was NO ONE else who knew this particular (Jaimini) saakai of Sama Vedam, but one (Thenkalai)  Sri Vaishanavar.  And he was in loukeekam in Sri Rangam – Sri Maha Periyava tried several times to get him to teach his knowledge to others.  Finally, very reluctantly he agreed – but his boss in the loukeekam job would not allow him to quit the job. So, ksaakshaath Sri Ranganatha Perumal of Sri Rangam Himself appeared in the dream of the boss and asked him to relieve his employee, so the latter could start this Jaimini Sama Veda Patasala.

3.       Ilayathankudi Patasalai is nicely situated, sandwiched between two Shiva Temples and is also the Athishtanam of a Guru in Sri Kanchi Guru Parampara.

4.       Thiruvidaimaruthur Patasalai pictures includes ones which signify Lord Mahalingaswamy Himself confirming to Sri Adi Shankarar that only Advaitham is satyam. I did my Nithya puja here and the kids there helped me a lot….you can’t find a better place to do this…

காஞ்சி மாமுனிவரின் வித்தியாப்பியாசம்

காமகோடி பீடம் ஸர்வக்ஞ பீடம் என்ப்படும்.இதன் பொருள்எல்லாம் தெரிந்தவர் என்பது. ஐந்து ஆண்டுகள் வேத,வேதாந்தம் முதல் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டிய அனைத்தையும் நம் ஆச்சார்யர் கற்றறிந்தார்.திருச்சிக்கு அருகிலுள்ள மகேந்திரமங்கலம் என்ற இடத்தில் பெரியவாளுக்கு படிப்பு தொடர்ந்தது.இறைவனே இறங்கி வந்திருக்கிறார் என்ற உண்மை தெரிந்தவர்களுக்கு பெரியவா படித்துத்தான் எதையும் தெரிந்து கொள்ள வேண்டுமா என்று கேள்வி எழுவது நியாயமே. உலக மரியாதையை ஒட்டித்தான் அவர் இந்த ஏற்பாட்டுக்கு உட்பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். ஆனால், படித்த முறையில் அவர் தன்னை மறைக்க முடியாமல் வெளிப்படுத்திய சம்பவங்கள் உண்டு. இவருக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லிக் கொடுத்தவர்கள் அந்தக் காலகட்டத்தில் பெரிய மேதைகள்.

அவர்கள் மற்ற இடங்களிலிருந்து கும்பகோணத்திலும் மகேந்திரமங்கலத்திலும் பெரியவாளுக்குப் பாடம் சொல்லித்
தருவதற்கென்றே வந்து தங்கினார்கள். ஒருநாள் வழக்கம்போல் மடத்துக்குப் பின்னால் இருந்த தோட்டத்தில் கொட்டகை அமைத்து அதில் காவேரி மணலைப் பரப்பிய இடத்தில் {வேறு சாதனங்கள் இல்லாத காலம்] பாடம் தொடங்கியது. இதில் வேடிக்கை என்னவென்றால்,சொல்லித்தர வந்த குரு, சீடரான பெரியவாளை நமஸ்கரித்துவிட்டுத்தான் பாடம் தொடங்குவார்.[தலை கீழ்ப் பாடம்] ஏனென்றால் கற்றுக் கொள்பவர் ஜகத்குரு ஆயிற்றே!

ஒருநாள் பாடம் எடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தபோது சீடர் மணலை அளைந்து கொண்டேயிருப்பதை குரு பார்த்தார்.எதுவும்
சொல்லாமல் தொடர்ந்து பாடத்தை எடுத்து முடித்தார். மறுநாளும் அப்படியே நடக்கவே குரு பாடத்தை பாதியிலேயே
நிறுத்திவிட்டு எழுந்து, “நான் ஊருக்குப் போகிறேன்” என்று ஒரு குண்டைத் தூக்கிப் போட்டார்.சீடருக்கு ஒன்றும்
புரியவில்லை. “பாடம் நடந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறதே….” என்று நயமாகச் சொல்லிப் பார்த்தார். என்ன பிரச்னை என்பதை
எப்படிக் கேட்பது? குருவே சொன்னார், “இப்போது படிப்பது சாதரணப் படிப்பு அல்ல. மனம்,புத்தி முழுவதையும்
ஒருமுகப்படுத்த வேண்டிய படிப்பு. கவனம் எங்கேயும் திசை திரும்பக்கூடாது.”

ஆத்மார்த்தமாகப் பாடம் நடத்துகிற அந்த குரு முதல் நாள் தன் சீடர், தான் சொல்வதை கவனமாகக் கேட்கவில்லை என்ற
மனத்தாங்கலுடன் இருந்தார். பதினைந்து வயதான சீடர் பாடம் நடக்கையில் மணலில் விரலை அளைந்து விளையாடிக்
கொண்டிருந்தது, அவருக்குப் பொறுக்கவில்லை.ஆனால், கண்டிக்கவும் முடியவில்லை.அந்த சீடர் ஜகத்குரு ஆயிற்றே!
என்ன செய்வது? “பாடம் கேட்கப் பிடிக்காதவருக்காக நான் ஏன் சிரமப்பட்டு ஊரைவிட்டு ஊர்வந்து காத்துக் கொண்டிருக்க
வேண்டும்?” என்று தொன்றிவிட்டது.அதைத் தெளிவாகப் புரிந்து கொண்ட பெரியவா அடக்கமாக,”கோபித்துக் கொள்ளாதீர்கள்; நான் நேற்று மணலில் விளையாடிக் கொண்டிருந்தது உண்மைதான், என்றாலும் நீங்கள் சொன்னதில்தான் என் முழு கவனமும் இருந்தது” என்று சமாதானப்படுத்த முயன்றார். குருவின் கோபம் குறையவேயில்லை. இதை எப்படி நம்புவது என்றும் புரியவில்லை.

அதையும் தெரிந்து கொண்ட பெரியவா, “நான் சொன்னதில் நம்பிக்கையில்லை என்றால் சோதித்துப் ருங்களேன்…”என்று
கேட்டுக்கொண்டார். அதன்படியே முதல் நாள் நடந்த பாடத்தில் சில கடினமான கேள்விகளை குரு எழுப்பினார்.அவர் முடிக்குமுன் பதில் பிரமாதாமாக பெரியவாளின் வாயிலிருந்து வந்தது.அவர் கேட்டதற்கு மட்டுமில்லாமல் அதற்கு முன்னால் நடந்த செய்திகளையும், பின்னால் வரப்போகிற செய்திகளையும் கூடப் பொழிந்து தள்ளினார். இதைக் கேட்ட குரு ஸதம்பித்துப் போனார். ”மன்னிக்க வேண்டும்..மன்னிக்க வேண்டும்!” என்று மனமுருகிக் கண்ணீர் விட்டார். நெடுஞ்சாண் கிடையாய்க் காலில் விழுந்தார். ”எனக்கு உத்தரவு தரணும்:நான் ஊருக்குப் போகிறேன்!” என்றார்.

“மறுபடியும் புதிராக இருக்கிறதே!” என்று பெரியவா திகைத்தார். ”முதலில் நான் படிப்பில் கவனம் செலுத்தவில்லை என்று கோபித்துக் கொண்டு புறப்பட்டது நியாயம்.இப்போது நான் எல்லாம் சரியாகச் சொல்லியும் ஏன் கிளம்புகிறார்?” என்று
நினைத்த பெரியவா கேட்டே விடுகிறார். “நான் சரியாகப் பதில் சொல்லிவிட்டேன் போல் இருக்கே…” என்று தயங்கியபடி பேசினார். உடனே குரு, “நீங்கள் அருமையாகப் பதில் சொன்னீர்கள். உங்களமிடமிருந்து நான்தான் நிறையத் தெரிந்து கொள்ளணும். தண்ணீர் கீழேயிருந்து மேலே பாயும் அதிசயத்தை நான் பார்த்தேன். இனி எனக்கு இங்கு வேலையே இல்லை!உத்தரவு கொடுங்கள்!” என்றார்.

எட்டு வயதில் நாலு வேதத்தையும் படித்து,12 வயதில் கற்க வேண்டிய அனைத்தையும் கற்றுவிட்டவர் ஆதிசங்கரர். அவரது மறு அவதாரம்தானே பெரியவா! இருவரும் எல்லாவற்றிலும் கரை கண்டிருப்பதில் எந்த அதிசயமும் இல்லை!.

Tharpanam to Sri Bhishmar

Didn’t know this until I got this email….Will do it on 31st.

 

 

Contrary to general belief and understanding, Tharpanam to Sri Bhishma can be done by even those who have parents and even by Brahmacharis (please see the attached).  And above all, it is very easy to do by just offering Water, after the morning Sandhyavandanam –  that’s all and no formal Tharpanam as done during Amavasya or during Upakarma.  This is traditionally done on Bhishmashtami day – the day Sri Bishma attained Mukthi (this year it comes on 31st January Tuesday).

The simple three slokas are attached herewith for the benefit of those who are interested to do Tharpanam for Sri Bishma. If you can spare a few minutes on Tuesday, please do Sri Bhishma Tharpanam.

First words to come out of Gramaphone – Rig Veda!!!

Got this from someone – must-read…..Max Muller’s contribution to Vedas is something beyond comprehension….Kanchi Periyava, Sri Anantharama Dikshithar etc have praised him a lot for his work…

 

 

HMV Company had once published a pamphlet giving the history of gramophone record. Gramophone was invented by Thomas Alva Edison in the 19th century. Edison, who had invented many other gadgets like electric
light and the motion picture camera, had become a legend even in his own time.

When He invented the gramophone record, which could record human voice for posterity, he wanted to record the voice of an eminent scholar on his first piece. For that he chose Prof. Max Muller of Germany, another great personality of the 19th century. He wrote to Max Muller saying, “I want to meet you and record your voice. When should I come?” Max Muller who had great respect for Edison asked him to come on a suitable time when most of the scholars of the Europe would be gathering in England.

Accordingly, Edison took a ship and went to England. He was introduced to the audience. All cheered Edison’s presence. Later at the request of Edison, Max Muller came on the stage and spoke in front of the instrument. Then Edison went back to his laboratory and by afternoon came back with a disc. He played the gramophone disc from his instrument. The audience was thrilled to hear the voice of Max Muller from the instrument. They were glad that voices of great persons like Max Muller could be stored for the benefit of posterity.

After several rounds of applause and congratulations to Thomas Alva Edison, Max Muller came to the stage and addressed the scholars and asked them, “You heard my original voice in the morning. Then you heard the same voice coming out from this instrument in the afternoon. Did you understand what I said in the morning or what
you heard this afternoon?”

The audience fell silent because they could not understand the language in which Max Muller had spoken. It was `Greek and Latin’ to them as they say. But had it been Greek or Latin, they would have definitely understood because they were from various parts of Europe. It was in a language which the European scholars had never heard.

Max Muller then explained what he had spoken. He said that the language he spoke was Sanskrit and it was the first sloka of Rig Veda, which says “Agni Meele Purohitam.” This was the first recorded public version
on the gramophone plate.

Why did Max Muller choose this? Addressing the audience he said, “Vedas are the oldest text of the human race. And Agni Meele Purohitam is the first verse of Rig Veda. In the most primordial time, when the people
did not know how even to cover their bodies and lived by hunting and housed in caves, Indians had attained high civilization and they gave the world universal philosophies in the form of the Vedas.” Such is the illustrious legacy of our country!

When “Agni Meele Purohitam” was replayed the entire audience stood up in silence as a mark of respect for the ancient Hindu sages.

This verse means:

“Oh Agni, You who gleam in the darkness, To You we come day by day, with devotion and bearing homage. So be of easy access to us, Agni, as a father to his son, abide with us for our well being.”

Vacation and Updates …

I know it has been a while since I actively posted articles/videos etc. Work is getting busier – more travel, meetings, calls etc…..crazy life…Also getting ready for my vacation to India starting Friday……All together, keeping me busy…..

Few updates::

1. On the video interviews series – I got another 20+ interviews from Shri Shivaraman and starting to edit…..As I am going to be in India starting Friday, I am not sure about the internet access etc at my father’s place. If  I get proper bandwidth, I will continue to upload – otherwise, there could be some delays. Nevertheless, we will be in touch!

2. On the veda samrakshana funds, so far, we have pledges totaling nearly Rs 2 Lakhs and have received cheques for nearly Rs 75,000. I am going to wait for few more weeks to collect cheques before presenting in the bank. I hope the rest of the folks send their contribution sooner. Also will keep you all posted as it develops….

Planning to go to more temples near Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Chidambaram area during this trip. Hope Lord Chandramouleeswarar blesses me to cover more temples with less hurdles….

Lastly, I am excited to be in India for Maha Shivarathiri…..couple of years back, I was at the mutt and Lord Ekambareswarar Temple on Maha Shivarathiri… Not sure where He wants me this time!

Will be in W.Mambalam during my Chennai stay…..Heard that the weather in Chennai is unusually great?! Waiting to get out of snowstorms in Chicago and get some pleasant weather there and most importantly eat some great food ….craving for lot of authentic food

Brahmasri Gopala Ganapadigal shares some interesting experiences and his exposure to several incidents how much He gave importance to veda pata sala etc….. Highlight is how He saved a very smart vedic student and how he himself got memory power from Mahaperiyava… This is one of the older ones, when Shri Shivaraman started to do these video recordings and didnt know how to get better audio/video etc.. For initial some time, the audio is quite low – so crank up the volume to max to hear it well…

Last night when I was talking to Shivaraman, he was getting ready to buy a professional-grade mic for better audio so we can expect digital quality audio going forward!!

இப்படித்தான் ஒருமுறை… குளித்துவிட்டு வந்ததும் அந்தக் கொடியில் உலர்த்தியிருந்த துண்டை எடுத்தார் ஸ்ரீரமணர். அந்த மூங்கில் கொடியின் ஓரத்தில் குருவி ஒன்று கூடு கட்டியிருந்தது. தவிர, குருவியானது நாலைந்து முட்டைகளையும் இட்டிருந்தது போலும்! இவை எதையும் கவனிக்காத ரமண மகரிஷி, துண்டை எடுக்க… அப்போது அவருடைய கை குருவியின் கூட்டில் பட்டது. இதனால், கூட்டில் இருந்து முட்டை ஒன்று கீழே விழுந்ததில் லேசாக விரிசல் உண்டாயிற்று!

இதைக் கண்டதும் ரமணர் பதறிப் போனார். செய்வதறியாது தவித்தார். இந்தக் கூட்டைக் கவனிக்காமல் இருந்து விட்டோமே… என்று கலங்கினார்; கண்ணீர் விட்டார்! அருகில் இருந்தவர்களை அவசரமாக அழைத்த மகரிஷி, ”மூங்கில் கொடியில் குருவியானது, கூடு கட்டியிருப்பதை எவருமே பார்க்கவில்லையா? அப்படி பார்த்திருந்தால், முன்னமே என்னிடம் சொல்லியிருக்கலாமே? கொடியில் இருந்த துண்டை எடுக்கும்போது கூட்டுக்கு ஒன்றும் நேராமல் தவிர்த்திருக்கலாமே…” என்று புலம்பிக் கொண்டே இருந்தார்.

‘எவ்வளவு பெரிய பாவம் செய்து விட்டோம்…’ என்று வருந்தியபடி இருந்த ரமணர், விரிசலுடன் இருந்த முட்டையை எடுத்து, தனது உள்ளங்கையில் வைத்துக் கொண்டார். அந்த முட்டையையே கருணையுடன் பார்த்தார். ‘பாவம் இதன் தாய்! இதனால் அது எவ்வளவு துக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும்? அந்தத் தாய்க் குருவி ஆசையுடனும் அன்புடனும் அடைகாத்த முட்டையை உடைத்துவிட்டதால் என் மீது அது எவ்வளவு கோபமாக இருக்கும்? இந்த விரிசல் சேருமா? சேர்ந்தால் நன்றாக இருக்குமே…’ – மனதுள் நினைத்துக் கொண்டார்.

கருணை மனமும் தாய்மை குணமும் கொண்டு முட்டையிடம் வாஞ்சை காட்டிய ரமணருக்கு, அப்போது உதித்தது யோசனை ஒன்று… விறுவிறுவென துணி ஒன்றை தண்ணீரில் நனைத்துக் கொண்டு வந்தார்; அந்த விரிசல் விழுந்த முட்டையைச் சுற்றிலும் ஈரத்துணியைக் கட்டினார்; அப்படியே பூப்போல மெள்ள எடுத்து வந்து கூட்டுக்குள்ளேயே வைத்தார். அவ்வளவுதான்! அன்று முழுவதும் வேறு எதிலும் ஈடுபடவே இல்லை ரமணர்! குருவிக் கூட்டுக்கு அருகிலேயே அமர்ந்த ரமண மகரிஷி, மனதுள் தோன்றும் போதெல்லாம் எழுந்து, கூட்டுக்கு அருகே போவதும் அந்த துணி கட்டிய முட்டையை எடுத்து கருணை வழிய பார்ப்பதுமாகவே இருந்தார். உள்ளங்கையில் முட்டையை ஏந்தியிருக்கும் வேளையில், அவருடைய மனம், ‘இந்த விரிசல் ஒட்டிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்; முட்டையானது உயிராக மலர வேண்டும்’ என்றே சிந்தித்தது.

ஞான குருவின் எண்ண அலைகள், அந்த முட்டை விரிசலிலேயே இரண்டறக் கலந்திருந்தது. ஏதோ மிகப் பெரியதொரு குற்றத்தைச் செய்துவிட்டது போல் கூனிக் குறுகியவர், அந்தத் தவறுக்கு பிராயச்சித்தம் தேடும் விதமாக குருவிக் கூட்டுக்கு அருகில் இருந்ததைக் கண்ட அன்பர்கள், ‘நம்முடைய மகான் செய்யும் இந்தக் காரியம் கிட்டத்தட்ட தவத்துக்கு இணையானதுதான்’ என உணர்ந்து சிலிர்த்தனர்.

அடுத்தடுத்த நாளும் இது தொடர்ந்தது. துணியை தண்ணீரில் நனைப்பதும், அந்த முட்டையில் கட்டி வைப்பதும், அருகில் இருந்தபடியே அடிக்கடி வாஞ்சையுடன் பார்த்து வருவதுமாக இருந்தார் ஸ்ரீரமணர்! ஏழாம் நாள்… துணியை நீரில் நனைத்து கட்டுவதற்காக, முட்டையை எடுத்தவர் அப்படியே வியந்து நின்றார். அவர் முகம் முழுவதும் நிம்மதி; ஆம்… அந்த விரிசலைக் காணோம்!

அன்பர்களை அழைத்த ரமணர் சந்தோஷத்துடன், ”இங்கே பார்த்தீர்களா? முட்டையில் விரிசல் இருந்த சுவடுகூட தெரியவில்லை. தாய்க் குருவிக்கு இது தெரிந்தால், எத்தனை சந்தோஷப்படும்? இனி ஒரு குறையுமில்லை. நல்லவேளை… மிகப் பெரிய பாவத்துக்கு ஆளாக இருந்த என்னை, இறைவன் காப்பாற்றி விட்டான்” என்று கூறி சின்னக் குழந்தை போல் பரவசமானார் ரமணர்.

சில நாட்கள் கழிந்த நிலையில், மூங்கில் கொடியின் ஓரத்தில் இருந்த குருவிக் கூட்டை எட்டிப் பார்த்த ரமண மகரிஷியின் மனமெல்லாம் நிறைந்தது. அந்த முட்டை குஞ்சாகப் பொரிந்து, உயிராகக் காட்சி தந்தது.

குருவிக் குஞ்சை அப்படியே எடுத்து உள்ளங்கையில் ஏந்திக் கொண்டார் ரமணர்; அதன் உடலை மெள்ள வருடிக் கொடுத்தார்.

ஆஸ்ரமத்து பணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் அன்பர் பெருமக்களை அழைத்தவர், ”பார்த்தீர்களா குழந்தையை! எவ்வளவு அழகாக இருக்கிறது!” என்று எல்லோரிடமும் குருவிக் குஞ்சைக் காட்டி குதூகலித்தார். தாய்க் குருவி, முட்டையை அடைகாத்ததோ இல்லையோ… அந்த தாய்க் குருவியின் ஸ்தானத்தில் இருந்தபடி முட்டையை அடைகாத்தார் ரமணர்.

‘நான்’ எனும் கர்வத்தையும் சிந்தனையையும் ஒழித்து, பார்க்கும் உயிரில் எல்லாம் இறைவனைக் கண்ட ரமணரின் கருணைக்கு எல்லை ஏது?!

I learnt from several incidents that in those days mutt went through a very tough financial struggle and there were days when the next bikshai for Periyava itself used to be a struggle – refer to an article that involves NTR and one rice bag…..Despite all these, the devotion to Periyava was unshaken and Periyavas anugraham to such were unparalleled……

1952 வரை மடத்தில் கைங்கர்யம் பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு பெரியவரின் பெயர் பஞ்சாபகேசன். பெரியவாளுடைய கைங்கர்யம்தான் வாழ்கை! என்று இருந்த பெரிய பக்தர். தள்ளாமையினால் மடத்திலிருந்து ஓய்வு பெற்றுக் கொண்டு பெரியவாளை பிரிய மனசில்லாமல் தஞ்சாவூரில் உள்ளே பிள்ளையிடம் வந்தார். உடல்தான் தஞ்சாவூரில் இருந்ததே ஒழிய, மனஸ் பூரா பெரியவாதான்! எனவே தஞ்சாவூரிலும் ஏதோ பெரியவா கைங்கர்யம் என்று பண்ணிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். பிள்ளையாண்டான் கேட்டான் ” ஏம்பா! உங்களுக்கு எப்போப்பார்த்தாலும் பெரியவா சேவைதானா? நீங்க படிச்ச படிப்புக்கு, அப்போவே ஏதாவது சர்கார் உத்தியோகம் பார்த்துண்டு இருந்தா………இப்போ பென்ஷனாவது வந்துண்டிருக்கும்……உங்க செலவுக்கு அது useful ஆக இருக்கும் இல்லியா?” என்றான்.
பஞ்சாபகேசன் பதறிப் போனார்!! “சிவ சிவா!!” அவருடைய உடல் ஒருமுறை நடுங்கியது. பேசக் கூட முடியலை. …..”பெரியவாளுக்கு கைங்கர்யம் பண்ண குடுத்து வெச்சிருக்கணும்டா!……நேக்கு அந்த பாக்யம் கெடச்சது. அவர் பக்கத்துலேயே இருந்து கைங்கர்யம் பண்ணினேன். நான் ஒண்ணு கேக்கறேன்…..அதுனால, நீங்கள்ளாம் என்ன கேட்டுப் போய்ட்டேள்? எல்லாரும் life ல நன்னாத்தானே இருக்கேள்? நமக்கெல்லாம் என்ன கொறை? சொல்லு…..இப்பிடி ஒரு குறையும் இல்லாமப் பாத்துக்கறதே என் பெரியவாதாண்டா……..” ஆவேசமாகச் சொன்னார்.

“இல்லேப்பா…….சர்கார் உத்யோகம்னா, பென்ஷன் வந்திருக்குமேன்னு ஒரு ஆதங்கத்ல சொன்னேன்” பையன் பேச்சை முடித்தான்.

கொஞ்சநாள் கழித்து, ஏதோ கார்யமாக காஞ்சிபுரம் போனான் மகன். வரிசையில் இவன் முறை வந்ததும், “நீ பஞ்சாபகேசன் புள்ளைதானே?” என்றார் பெரியவா.

“ஆமா……..பெரியவா”

“ஒன் தோப்பனார் நன்னா இருக்காரா? என்கிட்டே அவருக்கு எவ்வளவு ஆத்மார்த்தமான ப்ரியம், பக்தி தெரியுமோ? அவர நன்னா……வெச்சுக்கோ! என்ன செய்வியா? இந்த மடத்ல கைங்கர்யம் பண்ணறவாளுக்கெல்லாம் நெறைய பண்ணனும்னு எனக்கு ஆசைதான்……ஆனா, என்னால ஜாஸ்தி பண்ண முடியறதில்லை. குடுக்கறவா என்ன குடுக்கறாளோ, அத வெச்சுண்டு இந்த மடத்த நடத்த வேண்டியிருக்கு. இது “சர்க்கார்” ஆபீஸ் இல்லேல்லியோ? அதுனால, எல்லாரும் நன்னா இருக்கணும்னு அனவரதமும் காமாக்ஷியை ப்ரார்த்திச்சுக்கறதைத் தவிர என்னால வேற என்ன செய்ய முடியும்? ஆனா….ஒன் தோப்பனார் இந்த மடத்ல பண்ணின கைங்கர்யத்துக்கும், பக்திக்கும் அவருக்கு எதாவுது பண்ணனும்னு எனக்கு ஆசை.. அதுனால மாஸாமாசம் 25 கலம் நெல்லு அவருக்காக அவர் இருக்கற கிராமத்துக்கே வரதுக்கு ஏற்பாடு பண்ணியிருக்கேன்…..’பென்ஷன்’……னா!!” என்று முடித்தாரோ இல்லையோ, மகன் தடாலென்று பெரியவா முன் சாஷ்டாங்கமாக விழுந்து கதறி விட்டான்.
“சர்வேஸ்வரா ! எங்கப்பாகிட்ட ஒரு ஆதங்கத்துலதான் பேசினேனே ஒழிய, அவரோட கைங்கர்யத்தைப் பத்தி நான் கொறையே சொல்லலை பெரியவா….என்னை மன்னிச்சுடுங்கோ!”

“ஒன்னை நான் கொறையே சொல்லலை……..ப்பா ! என்னால பெருஸா எந்த ஒதவியும் பண்ணமுடியலை…ன்னுதான் இந்த சின்ன ஒத்தாசைக்கு வழி பண்ணினேன்”

காஞ்சி மகாபெரியவர் சித்தி அடைவதற்கு ஒரு ஆண்டு முன்பாக, உடல் தளர்ச்சி பெற்ற நிலையில், ஒருநாள் மாலையில், தனது சிஷ்யர்களை அழைத்து தான் சிதம்பரம் சென்று ஸ்ரீ நடராஜப் பெருமானை தரிசிக்க வேண்டுமென்றும், அவருடைய பூஜையில் அணிவிக்கப்படும் ஸ்ரீ குஞ்சிதபாதத்தை தரிசிக்க வேண்டுமென்றும் கூறினார். (குஞ்சிதபாதம் என்பது பல வகை வேர்களால் உருவாக்கப்பட்டு, நடராஜப் பெருமானுக்கு அணிவிக்கப்படுவது) குஞ்சிதபாதத்தை தரிசித்தால் நோய் அகலுவதுடன், மோட்சம் கிடைக்கும்.

இதைக்கேட்ட சிஷ்யர்களுக்கு கலக்கம். பெரியவரை சிதம்பரத்திற்கு எவ்வாறு அழைத்துச் செல்வது என சிந்தித்தனர். என்ன ஆச்சரியம்! மறுநாள் காலை சூரிய உதயத்துக்கு முன்பாக, சிதம்பரம் நடராஜருக்கு பூஜை செய்யும் தீட்சிதர்கள் சிலர், காஞ்சிபுரம் சங்கரமடம் வந்து பெரியவரை தரிசித்து பிரசாதம் கொடுக்க அனுமதி கேட்டனர்.
சிஷ்யர்கள் வியப்பின் உச்சிக்கே போய்விட்டனர். மகாபெரியவரிடம் சென்று விபரத்தைக் கூறவும், அவருக்கும் பேரானந்தம். தீட்சிதர்களை அருகில் வருமாறு சைகையால் அழைத்து, பிரசாதத்தட்டிலிருந்து குஞ்சிதபாதத்தை எடுத்து, தலையில் வைத்துக்கொண்டார்.

குஞ்சிதபாதத்துடன் உள்ள மகாபெரியவரின் படம் நோய் தீர்க்கும் மருந்தாக கருதப்படுகிறது. “தேடி வந்த சிதம்பரம்’ படத்தை நாமும் வணங்கி நற்பலன் பெறுவோம்.
